-James Baldwin

KITABU Publishing (pronounced kee-tah-boo, Kiswahili for "book") is an international, independent book publishing and distribution company founded in 1998 by head author Joseph R. Gibson in order to conscientize people, particularly young African-Americans.
Conscientization (to be conscientized) focuses on achieving an in-depth understanding of the world, allowing for the perception of socioeconomic and political contradictions and inequalities. Conscientization also includes taking action against the oppressive elements in one’s life that are identified by that understanding. According to Arlene Goldbard, “conscientization means breaking through prevailing mythologies to reach new levels of awareness—in particular, awareness of oppression, being an ‘object’ of others’ will rather than a self-determining ‘subject,’ of being an object in a world where only Subjects have power. The process of conscientization involves identifying contradictions in experience through dialogue and becoming part of the process of changing the world.”
Paulo Freire wrote that conscientization “refers to learning to perceive social, political, and economic contradictions, and to take action against the oppressive elements of reality. The process of conscientization involves identifying contradictions in experience through dialogue and becoming a Subject with other oppressed subjects—that is, becoming part of the process of changing the world.”
Simply stated, KITABU Publishing exists so that we may change the world.
